Average conversion rate by keyword length, 2026: five-word keywords 9.64% organic, all keywords 8.64% organic and 6.46% in Google Ads, ChatGPT visitors 12.06%

The highest-converting keyword length is five words, with an organic conversion rate of 9.64% and a paid conversion rate of 7.24%. Across all keyword lengths, the average conversion rate is 8.64% for organic search and 6.46% for Google Ads. We studied the average conversion rate for paid and organic search by keyword length, qualifier words, industry, and AI assistant.

  • Five-word keywords convert 46.0% higher than one-word keywords.
  • Transactional keywords convert at 10.45% in organic search, 2.1x the rate of research keywords.
  • “Emergency” or “same day” in a keyword raises conversion rate 81.8%. “Cost,” “price” or “quote” lowers it 53.2%.

Keyword length Example search Organic conversion rate Google Ads conversion rate
1 word dentist 5.81% 4.96%
2 words payroll software 8.35% 6.43%
3 words women’s running shoes 8.24% 6.13%
4 words small business loan rates 9.40% 6.89%
5 words payroll software for small business 9.64% 7.24%
6 words personal injury lawyer in los angeles 7.98% 5.89%
7+ words how long does it take to get a business loan 8.29% 6.07%
All keywords 8.64% 6.46%
Line chart of average organic and Google Ads conversion rate by keyword length in 2026, peaking at five words with 9.64% organic and 7.24% paid

Key findings:

  • Keywords of five or more words get about 10 times fewer searches than keywords of one to three words.
  • Five-word keywords convert at 9.64% in organic search, the highest of any length.
  • Conversion rate drops at six words and up. Question searches average 7.03 words and convert 45.0% below average.

Our read on this: five words is usually where a searcher has named the product, the qualifier and the place. Add a sixth word and the search tends to turn into a question, and people asking questions want an answer more than a provider.

Conversion Rate by Keyword Qualifier

One qualifier word can raise or lower conversion rate more than added length does.

Search includes Example search Organic conversion rate Google Ads conversion rate Change versus average
“Emergency” or “same day” emergency vet 17.33% 15.20% +81.8%
A provider name estate planning attorney 10.71% 8.92% +25.9%
A city or state dermatologist austin tx 10.35% 7.55% +16.7%

“Best” or “top” best crm for startups 4.81% 4.30% -34.1%
A question word how does a 401k work 4.91% 3.37% -45.0%
“Cost,” “price” or “quote” business insurance quote 3.92% 3.13% -53.2%
Bar chart of how keyword qualifiers change conversion rate in 2026, from +81.8% for emergency or same day to -53.2% for cost, price or quote

Key findings:

  • “Emergency” and “same day” raise conversion rate 81.8%, more than any other qualifier.
  • Price words lower conversion rate 53.2%.
  • A city or state name raises conversion rate 16.7%, while “near me” lowers it 17.6%.

The most likely explanation is that many “near me” searchers call straight from the Google map listing, so the conversion never shows up on the website. People who type a city name are more often planning ahead, and they read the site before they reach out.

LLM Conversion Rates: AI Assistant Visitors

  • Visitors sent by large language model (LLM) assistants such as ChatGPT convert at 9.55%, 10.6% higher than organic search visitors.
  • AI assistants send 1.17 visits for every 100 organic search visits.
Column chart of average conversion rate by channel in 2026: AI assistant referrals 9.55%, organic search 8.64%, Google Ads 6.46%

Conversion Rate by AI Assistant

Conversion rate ranges from 2.48% to 12.06% by assistant. ChatGPT sends the most AI visits and converts highest.

AI assistant Conversion rate, 2026 Versus organic search Share of AI visits
ChatGPT 12.06% +39.7% 65.90%
Microsoft Copilot 9.21% +6.7% 4.11%
Claude 6.89% -20.2% 5.42%
Perplexity 4.33% -49.8% 12.78%
Gemini 2.48% -71.3% 11.80%
All AI assistants 9.55% +10.6% 100.00%
Bar chart of conversion rate by AI assistant in 2026: ChatGPT 12.06%, Microsoft Copilot 9.21%, Claude 6.89%, Perplexity 4.33%, Gemini 2.48%, against an organic search average of 8.64%

Key findings:

  • ChatGPT visitors convert at 12.06%, almost five times the 2.48% rate for Gemini visitors.
  • ChatGPT sends 65.90% of all AI assistant visits.
  • Microsoft Copilot visitors convert at 9.21%, above the organic average but 23.6% below ChatGPT.

We think the difference between assistants comes down to where each one shows up and who’s using it. ChatGPT users often ask outright for a recommendation, so ChatGPT does the comparing and sends a visitor who’s ready to act. Copilot is built into Microsoft 365 and Bing, where a lot of users are at work checking a fact for a task. Gemini answers show up inside Google’s own apps, where a click is often a quick source check.

LLM Conversion Rate by Search Type

AI assistant visitors convert higher than organic and paid visitors for every search type.

Search type AI assistant conversion rate Organic conversion rate Google Ads conversion rate
Transactional 11.56% 10.45% 8.18%
No qualifier 9.24% 8.35% 6.14%
Research 5.49% 4.96% 3.90%
All searches 9.55% 8.64% 6.46%

AI Prompt Length vs. Keyword Length

Average words per search: Google keyword 1.9, non-brand Google Ads search 3.6, ChatGPT prompt with web search 8.7, ChatGPT prompt without web search 13.5
  • ChatGPT prompts that trigger a web search averaged 8.7 words in early 2026, up from 4.7 words a year earlier.
  • The average Google keyword is 1.9 words long.
  • The average non-brand Google Ads search is 3.6 words long.

An 8.7-word prompt has about as much detail as a long-tail keyword, and we think that’s why AI visitors convert like long-tail searchers.

Google Ads Cost per Conversion by Keyword Length

Column chart of Google Ads cost per conversion by keyword length in 2026, from $236.98 for one word to $70.08 for seven or more words
  • One-word keywords cost $236.98 per conversion. Keywords of seven or more words cost $70.08, 70.4% less.
  • The average cost per click falls from $11.76 at one word to $4.25 at seven or more words, because fewer advertisers bid on long keywords.

What a Good Conversion Rate Looks Like by Keyword Length

  • One to two words: 5.81% to 8.35% organic, 4.96% to 6.43% in Google Ads
  • Three to five words: 8.24% to 9.64% organic, 6.13% to 7.24% in Google Ads
  • Six words or more: 7.98% to 8.29% organic, 5.89% to 6.07% in Google Ads

The median Google Ads conversion rate across all searches, brand searches included, is 7.52%. Each benchmark above assumes the searcher reaches a page built for that exact search.

How These Figures Are Calculated

  • Conversion rate = conversions ÷ clicks (paid) or sessions (organic and AI) × 100
  • Change versus average = a qualifier’s conversion rate ÷ the same advertiser’s average conversion rate, minus 1
  • Cost per conversion = ad spend ÷ conversions

All figures exclude searches that contain the advertiser’s own brand name.
